Shalom Court Auckland Incorporated is a registered charitable Society with its primary object to provide residential care for senior Jewish persons in New Zealand.
As a charitable organisation we rely heavily on donations and the goodwill of the community in order to keep providing the services we do. This is becoming increasingly important in the current climate where operating costs have significantly increased.
We greatly appreciate all donations, thank you!
Shalom Court is able to receive donations via the sale of ‘Bricks’. Each brick can be purchased for $2.00 but we do ask that they be purchased in ‘chai’ blocks of 9 bricks ($18).
Eighteen is the numerical value of the Hebrew word “chai” which means “life”. In Judaism, it is common to gift in multiples of $18 or “chai”, symbolically blessing the recipient of the gift with a good long life.
Generally, these gifting rituals take place in connection with the celebration, honoring or remembrance of loved ones. This custom is also common during all life-cycle events, including Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and any Jewish occasion from birth announcements and weddings to expressing condolences. The act of giving, gifting or donating $18 or a multiples thereof is commonly referred to as “giving chai” and representative of giving a gift of ‘life”.
There is no maximum number of ‘chai’ blocks that can be purchased. A Brick Certificate will be presented to all donors (or recipient if being made in the name of another person) and a donation receipt will be provided for tax credit purposes.
Use this calculator to calculate the total donation amount for the number of ‘chai’ blocks you wish to purchase.
Bricks can be purchased from the Office Administrator or by completing the form below. Payment details will be provided once the form has been submitted.
