Volunteers

Around 30 volunteers contribute daily to the residents’ well-being at all levels of the business.

The Auckland Jewish Aged Home Trust Board owns and manages the land and buildings of Shalom Court. Its elected members are volunteers.

The Society membership also elects the volunteer Board of Shalom Court which is the governing body of Shalom Court. As well as being responsible for strategic planning and oversight of its delivery, Board members are actively involved in the lives of residents and their families, and supporting the well-being of staff. Their work includes welcoming residents, catering for and celebrating Jewish festivals, monthly Happy Hours with the residents, floral arrangements and plant care throughout the facility, fundraising for capital purchases and improvement, communications with members of the Society through a quarterly newsletter, networking with Jewish and secular community organisations, hosting private functions, and attending NZACA branch and aged care related meetings and seminars.

A subcommittee of volunteers, including a management member, HCA staff and a relative, plans the 7-day a week resident activity programme. An appointed resident advocate chairs the monthly resident meeting and listens to concerns and feedback regarding care services. A volunteer beautician offers manicures and attends to facial grooming. Volunteers attend to personal shopping needs and drive residents to appointments. Dogs and their caregivers visit regularly, and the Friday night Sabbath service is performed by a roster of volunteers.
